Define rest...ok, mine is...

YOU is...

You have heard this proverb "a change is as good as a rest". I am here to tell you how true that quote really is. I was worn out last week...there is sew much stuff behind the scenes in managing "that other blog" that I think it took its toll on me last week.

Ohhhhh and my REST is somewhat different than most. At least that is what my DH keeps telling me..
He tells me a lot of things, and sometimes I think he knows be better sew I don't argue with him...

My goal on the weekend was to do up Amy Bradley's, most amazing Do Dah Daisy...
what I was not prepared for was how large her transfer pieces were going to be.
After calculating the cost for me to purchase more wonder under stabilizer,
the cost was going to be over $100.00 just for the paper...
that is not taking into account fabric and all.
Wonder under is very expensive in Canada....
( gotta find me another source)

Sew ON to PLAN B...
I made up a new daisy, chose diff't fabric
but in same hues and started tracing...
I could cut out 8 daisies to a yard...
vs 2 per yard.
Amy's required over 40+ daisies...
13.5 size...mine were less than 6 inches.

I first traced and cut out 42 daisies..much smaller and
different pattern.... ( I am still going to do hers, when I source out
a cheaper alternative to wonder under)

Then I cut out all the centers and cut out all my 9.5 inch squares
and scored the backs of daisies and iron on all of them
onto their white KONA backs...( Janes Fabrics has lots of it...)
She loves KONA...as much as I do.
Her KONA is on SALE!

Ohhh see the check buttons..I made 42  self covered buttons
...of those too...I thought
it would make them pop and give it a 50's look!
they will go in the center of each daisy.
I have been purchasing buttons from this online store
for quite awhile..I have tried others and I keep coming
back to him...they are durable and they don't break
apart like others I have purchased in the past...
These are #45 a nice size 1 1/8 inch...
and I like #30's too...3/4 of an inch...
I have used buttons on almost every quilt I have made..

And then I stared sewing in strips and then started to play
with what design would suit me.... I think that took me 2 hours..I kept
walking away and coming back...Do you do that?
Spend more time finding a pattern? lol

close up of the boldness of this color...the color is a deep hue
of  raspberries....against the white it looks like a bowl of raspberries and cream...

Sew that is where I am ..... I still have to add 2 borders
and I am debating whether I want to stitch the words
instead of Appliques....I think embroidery in Black Presencia threads?
What say you..?
Applique or Embroidery?

I also have to blanket stitch around every daisy....
not going to do that today.. I .think this morning  I will cut and sew
kona for the borders....should I just do a wide border
and add You is, You smart, You.....
or should I add a thin inner pattern border to break it up..??????

mmmmm I am stuck here...

RESTED yes, ....I am going to take
this with me this weekend at my retreat and do up
all the blanket stitching there...It may take awhile for that..

SEW check, check, check, ...my goal was accomplished...
( This quilt is fairly large and already spoken for....
a very special order for a very special missy)

SEW tell me....applique or embroider..
IN the meantime..I am heading off to that other blog
and upload some giveaways for this weeks guest....
wink...
UPDATE...went with a wide  KONA border
and will embroider the words....I changed the plan a bit
more pics soon...I already have embroidered one complete
sash at the top...oh my ..lol
SEW thanks for the suggestions...

That is going to be cute! Can I say that you can do both? What a treasure that quilt will be.

Have you ever tried mistyfuse?

I rested by making a rag quilt. I'll have to make another because hubby has claimed it as his own.

I LOVE it!! The buttons are going to be SEW cute! Someone is very lucky...

Linda V said...

Since you have so much applique, I say EMBROIDER! No matter what, it is so cute! Precious, even!! The recipient will LOVE it for sure! You did this all in one weekend? Are the flowers all cut by hand? You are amazing!

Annie said...

Another cute, cute quilt! The b&w check buttons will really add pop to it for sure. Glad to hear you are all rested and ready for anything!

Loralynn said...

It's absolutely darling! I say go with the embroidery. It will make a nice contrast to all the applique you have to do on there!

Jo's Corner said...

I'd say go with what You enjoy doing the most. That is going to be darling! I especially like the buttons and that it's PINK! Here's a Funny for you: As I was reading about what you might add to the border, I "somehow" read "You Is Thin"! :D Kinda got things mixed up in the whole "adding this and border size"! Glad you took some personal time, Madame Samm! Love Ya! ~ Jo

Oh, I just love it!! and how special for that Little Missy! I agree with Loralynn, who said to embroider, to contrast the appliqué of the flowers. Love the idea of a small border to frame before your add the white, and the buttons will tie it altogether.
I love the way you rest!

Thearica said...

I love the idea of the inner border before the finale. Love your quilt! She is going to LOVE it too!

I just love your quilt, everything about it....you know me, applique!

Sew much applique' needs to be embroidered. And love the buttons!

Love seeing the process....not just the finish. Fun! I love the vision of a narrow,(scrappy maybe?) border of the raspberry fabrics, and then the white with embroidered words. The buttons are awesome, too! Just my humble opinion. Whoever gets that will be bowled over, for sure!! Beautiful!

Beautiful quilt. I am going to have to say embroider :)

Grace Rose said...

Beautiful work you do while resting :) For myself, I would add a teenie pink stop border, and a wider white border. Wouldn't it be pretty with a gingham pink binding? Just sayin' .... what color are you embroidering with?? Though, applique letters you do are marvelous too :) :)

Love it and love the buttons! I think embroidery would be so pretty. Great job Samm! Glad you got some rest and had some fun too!

No wonder you were shattered - I'm exhausted looking at all this!! You cut, designed and made buttons! You are a busy bee :)
It's going to be great - for my tuppence, I think you should add a thin border too, and how could you not embroider such a special quilt?! It will just look perfect.
Mmmmmmm raspberries and cream, off to the fridge for me!

I love the raspberry color and agree with the embroider over applique. T

Samm I love this - smaller daisies look perfect. The raspberry color is luscious and the buttons are over the top! Appliqued words will show up more but embroidery is so fun to do. :) Either will be wonderful. blessings, marlene

PINK PINK PINK!!! Woohooo....my little buglet, Kaylabug would go nuts over this one. I guess I need to add this to the never ending list of things to do. So, so pretty and I love the embroidery you are adding. :)

I vote applique. It's wonderful. The buttons are perfect. Have fun blanket stitching at your retreat! Take a break once in awhile.

What's wonder under - is that a fusible, or a stabiliser for machine embroidery? If it's the latter you can substitute starch, and it's probably much cheaper. Not sure if we get wonder under here in Australia, but I know we do have some brands.

Hi Samm, been trying to post a comment, but *%&^**& blogger wouldn't let me grrr..I finally figured out that when you sign in to your blog..if the little box is checked that says stay signed in..it won't let you post comments! okies, now on to more important stuff..LOVE LOVE LOVE these tiny covered buttons..the black and white and raspberry is perfect together!! will make a stunning statement..could even be a prize winner you know? I say yes to the inner border, a nice thin one would make it POP, perhaps in black?..and yes to the embroidering of the words..a perfect touch..this will be beautiful! xoxo Christel

You is brilliant!
Glad you found a solution to make this quilt possible. Yikes. You scared me with the prices - hope you find a better source for the Wonder Under.

Love the addition of the buttons to the flower centers.

My 2 cents?...
Add an inner border.
Applique.

evelyn said...

Girl, after a rest like that, you must feel rejuvenated. LOL. Love the raspberry. Black embroidery would tie in with those buttons and really make them pop. How about a thin raspberry border, and raspberry binding.
Gonna go have a dish of raspberries and ice cream now!

maggie said...

I love the quilt Madame Samm and think that blanket stitch would look perfect. And I do like the idea of a thin border. Love the color.
God job.

Patti said...

I love this quilt Madame Samm. Now it just depends on whether you want to hand stitch around every daisy (I think I would) or machine them. I agree with everyone else in that a thin black border would be perfect and also blanket stitch in black around the daisies - either by hand or machine. But either way this quilt is going to be stunning.
Lots of Love

Cute! Re sticky stuff...type in www.quiltshops.com and then search for Wonder Under, or better yet, Steam a Seam Light 2. You should be able to afford the prices you encounter. ;-)

My, so much work, all those daisies! Love the colour! I would say thin inner border and embroidery :)

WOW!! I wish I could REST like you do!! ...lol...
These days it takes all my energy just to get myself breakfast/showered/dressed & then I need to sit down for a while!
I love, love, love your quilt, you are SEW clever! I think a small border around it before the white border would look good too, and if it was me, I would embroider the wording in the black Presencia thread too. This will look stunning when it is finished Samm. Hugs n Blessings from Sue in Oz xx

Oh Yum! Yes, Raspberries & Cream, I just love the colors Samm! Remember, I am one of those wantobe's and never quilted. Visualizing what the Quilters have said here, I would embroidered on a narrower piece before putting on a border. It is just lovely!! Glad you rested well!! :D

Huggs,
Nancy

Oh that is going to be such a pretty quilt. I'm partial to embroidery. Whatever you decide it'll be beautiful. I may have to try this type of "resting".

Have a nice evening.

I love your hand embroidery and think it would be perfect for this quilt. Would a Go Cutter have a similar flower die to save some time? That is, if one is so lucky to own one! Can't wait to see the finished quilt....

Oh my, that is sew cute! I love the color. I think a small border and then embroider the words. I love the buttons too. Cant wait to see if finished. It is going to be just darling.

I'm glad you got some time on the weekend to do something you wanted to do. No doubt that "other blog" has been a bit draining. I can't even imagine! I love your ingenuity! Thanks for sharing how you adapted the design. I'll look forward to seeing the finished quilt, which will surely be a stunner. I vote for embroidery!

Oh, Samm, I feel we are kindred spirits. When I am stressed, I just want to go and hide in my sewing room and sew. And for some reason, all the colors I am attracted to right now are pinks. I just don't have too many in my stash right now. Love the daisies and I am currently reading the Help on my Kindle. I am half way through and very much enjoying it. What will you do when that other blog campaign is over? Will that blog still be going on with something else? You truly inspire me. Thanks.

This is adorable! Love the quote from 'The Help' and it will be lovely in embroidery. I also love the gingham buttons. Too cute!

The quilt is too cute. I was wondering how you managed to keep both blogs up and going in such style. Do take care and get your rest. We need you too much to have anything happen to you. Would mailing wonder under be an option? We get it pretty darn cheap around here. Especially with a 50% off coupon which I get all the time.

Deborah in Atlanta said...

Everybody else seems to be commenting on how you can finish the quilt, so I won't address that issue. If you'd like, maybe we could find a way to get the Wonder Under here, and get it mailed to you. Like MooseStash Quilting says in her comment above, we get 50% off coupons all the time, so the savings could help defray some of the mailing costs. Be glad to pick some up and mail it to you. Just let me know.

I have an embroidery question. I've forgotten so much embroidery skills since 8th grade Home Ec. How many strands of thread do you use when back stitching words? or anything?? I want to do some embroidery and I' almost afraid to start because I don't want to ruin my quilt.

Well better late than never Samm. I was going to say words but as the border width I am not sure myself. I tend to get into a rut and do a thin border first so the eye can rest but if I wanted to go outside my box then I would do a wider border so there you have it. Wonderful quilt..yeah for you!

WOW about the wonder under prices ; I don't use it so am not familiar with how much it is in good old Indiana ! I have not done much applique , but when I do I used starch ; get them all nice and stiff and it seems to work fine ; I have used the steam a seam cut into little pieces and fusible interfacing cut into strips -- I am NOT a pro at it , however it seems to work fine ; the starch is a little messy and can make your iron messy but it's cheap and cleans up easily !
